SARM S23 Vs Masteron Comparison And Complete Breakdown – Can S23 Be A Masteron Replacement?

S23 Vs Masteron

Masteron is probably the most quintessential hardening agent in the bodybuilding world pre-contest.

If you are lean enough (sub 10%) adding Masteron into a cycle can literally make a night and day difference when it comes to how dry, hard, and grainy a physique can appear.

If you didn’t already know, Masteron is a DHT derivative (a dihydrotestosterone derived anabolic steroid), and also goes by the name Drostanolone.

On paper, Masteron looks like a pretty useless steroid, featuring an Anabolic/Androgenic ratio of only 62/25, however, DHT has a much greater binding affinity to the androgen receptor than Testosterone does, and it is five times more Androgenic as well.

Despite its’ weak Anabolic/Androgenic ratio, Masteron’s chemical structure (being a DHT derivative) enables it to prove incredibly useful by hardening the muscle, boosting strength, and directly promoting lipolysis (the breakdown of fats and other lipids by hydrolysis to release fatty acids, AKA “fat-burning”).

It also exerts blatant anti-estrogenic like effects in the body, and some guys manage to do away completely with their Aromatase Inhibitor (AI) use on cycle when they add in something like Masteron or Proviron.

At one point it was prescribed regularly as a very effective breast cancer-fighting drug due to its’ effect on Estrogen levels.

It can also enhance the activity of other steroids due to the strong SHBG binding affinity, freeing up more usable Testosterone in the body.

Why Masteron is such a great compound to compare to S23 is that S23 may actually prove in the near future to be an effective, and safer alternative to Masteron (in bodybuilding terms), and possibly even a complete replacement.

First off, let’s cover the benefits and potential negative side effects of S23 Vs Masteron.

S23 Benefits:

  • Great lean mass builder
  • Very impressive gains in strength
  • Notable increase in endurance
  • Enhanced levels of fat oxidization
  • Can completely off-set catabolism in a calorie deficit
  • Body fat melts off much easier
  • Greatly enhanced levels of muscle hardness, dryness, and vascularity comparable to moderate-high dosages of DHT derived Steroids
  • Zero water retention
  • Decrease in prostate size (actually a benefit relative to DHT derivatives as anabolic steroids are notorious for increasing prostate size)

S23 Possible Negative Side Effects:

  • Possible dehydration, night sweats and cramps (increased water intake is necessary)
  • Increased aggression and irritability
  • High levels of suppression and very probable chance of complete shutdown (reversible during PCT)
  • Possible hair loss (the ratio of individuals who don’t get any hair loss far outweigh those who do seem to get some hair loss from it)
  • Temporary testicle shrinkage (reversible during PCT)
  • Only one study done on it and it was conducted on rats not humans

Masteron Benefits:

  • Decent for strength
  • Notable increase in endurance
  • Enhanced levels of fat oxidization
  • Body fat melts off much easier
  • Greatly enhanced levels of muscle hardness, dryness, and vascularity (arguably the best hardening drug ever)
  • Zero water retention
  • Enhances the activity of the other steroids due to the strong SHBG binding affinity, freeing up more usable Testosterone in the body
  • Very thoroughly researched compound with countless clinical studies done on it

Masteron Possible Negative Side Effects:

  • Can cause dried out joints from Estrogen suppression resulting in a greater risk of injury (not to the extent of Winstrol though)
  • Increase in prostate size
  • Greatly increased hair loss
  • Acne
  • Hair growth (where you don’t want it)
  • High levels of suppression and very probable chance of complete shutdown (reversible during PCT)
  • Temporary testicle shrinkage (reversible during PCT)
  • Horrible for size gains
  • Not female friendly at all (can cause virilization)
  • Poor for cholesterol levels (not as bad as many other steroids are though)

S23 Vs Masteron – Which Is Better And Why?

On paper these compounds don’t really differ too significantly.

In fact, if you were to compare S23 to any anabolic steroid, Masteron or Winstrol would probably be the closest match.

However, there are a few things to note.

Size And Strength Comparisons – S23 Vs Masteron

First of all, after what I’ve seen I truly think that S23 will provide greater gains in lean muscle and strength than Masteron.

Masteron is a very poor mass builder. In fact, it is probably one of the worst steroids in existence for actually packing on an appreciable amount of tissue.

I would only reserve it typically for contest prep where getting as shredded, dry and grainy as possible is the goal.

Masteron is essentially just pure DHT, and as such it will dry out and condition the look of the muscle, but it can also cause drying out of the joints, making the user more susceptible to injury.

It isn’t nearly as bad as Winstrol is in this regard, but it is still a possibility.

S23 seems to also have a dehydrating effect of sorts, but the scale of which Masteron causes dry achy joints seems to be slightly more so than S23 (Winstrol is far worse than both in this regard).

When you’re trying to get bigger and stronger, the last thing you need is more stress on your joints.

As far as strength gains goes, I think it’s safe to say that S23 is better than Masteron as well.

In fact, I think even a moderate dose of S23 would likely provide greater strength gains than a high dose of Masteron.

For strength, Masteron is just satisfactory, and as a muscle builder it performs quite poorly.

It is pretty much just a cosmetic drug in my eyes for enhancing the look to a physique, or for the SHBG or anti-estrogen effects it can also provide.

Dosage Comparisons – S23 Vs Masteron

The dosage ranges for S23 show the greatest benefit with the least side effects at 20-30mg per day, while the dosage ranges for Masteron for bodybuilding purposes fall into the 400-600mg per week range.

An educated guess would be that 30mg of S23 is roughly equivalent to 400mg or so of Masteron cosmetically/body composition benefit wise if you had to make a direct comparison.

In terms of strength and size though, you’d need a much higher dose of Masteron than 400mg to match the same size and strength gains that 30mg of S23 can produce.

Body Composition Comparisons – S23 Vs Masteron

Both S23 and Masteron have an apparent cosmetic benefit, and that is what I personally would reserve their use for.

They both result in greatly enhanced levels of muscle hardness, dryness, and vascularity.

In terms of which is better for this purpose, I would be inclined to say that Masteron edges out S23 in this regard, especially when run at higher dosages.

600mg of Masteron per week can literally make a physique look several % leaner in body fat, and achieve a level of dryness that would simply be impossible otherwise.

Although, some may have a more favorable response to one or the other based on their genetic predispositions.

One of my close friends who compared S23 to moderately dose Masteron seemed to feel they were identical in terms of body composition benefits.

Side Effects Comparisons – S23 Vs Masteron

On paper, S23 seems like a far safer choice as Masteron can negatively affect your lipid profile, and is pure DHT so it will have a very negative effect on the prostate, as well as greatly exacerbate the progression of male pattern baldness if that individual is genetically prone to hair loss.

S23 not only doesn’t cause any of these side effects, but it was shown to reduce prostate size in the rats in the study.

This makes this compound a potentially very attractive alternative for a wide spectrum of bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts, and their rat subjects.

As mentioned already, S23 will absolutely produce better size and strength gains than Masteron, which would make it the more ideal alternative in a bulking phase.

However, there is still the fact that there is only study done on S23, which was conducted on rats, and Masteron is a very thoroughly researched compound with countless clinical studies done on it.

Ultimately, it isn’t for me to assert which is safer than one or the other in terms of potential negative side effects, I can just reiterate what I’ve noticed and what we know as of now.

  1. Speaking of DHT, what is your opinion on Finasterides effects on the body when a MPB prone man would try to get in shape? I’ve heard it’s generally bad since it lowers DHT (obviously), however you may have more Testosterone comparatively as less of it is able to be converted to DHT.

If you were much more prone to MPB yourself (I’m assuming you are not based on reading this article), how would you go about trying to get in the best shape while minimizing hair loss? One would imagine ru58841 by itself would not be quite enough…

What I mean by this is, what PEDs would you be taking, and which ones would you be avoiding (for either a bulk or a cut)? How would you know?

Again, thank you for all that you do!

    1. Yes systemically lowering your DHT will negatively affect your body composition and potential muscle gains. How much exactly, we can’t say for certain, but it is definitely a concern. It doesn’t matter if you have more Test if it’s all bound (DHT frees up more usable Test from SHBG).

I have several articles on hair loss prevention. I am fairly prone to it.

The most hair safe compounds (typically) are the ones that don’t feature a high androgen rating, and aren’t derived from DHT, and don’t convert to DHT. This is why SARMs can be so great for hair loss prone individuals.

  2. Hello Derek!

Great article! I really interested in trying S23 but am a little afraid about this hair loss possibility. I’m a little prone to hair loss (my father is bald) not much but I am and I take finasteride/propecia for this. Do you think I’ll have problems taking S23? Would be ok to take it together with finasteride? Any other advice on stoping the hair loss from S23? Many thanks man!

    1. I wasn’t a huge fan. Not because it doesn’t work well, but because of its perceived androgenicity. Yes it’s one of the worst SARMs for hair loss.
