The best thing about Happy Hippo is that their quality is head and shoulders above 99% of other vendors, so I don’t need as many grams to achieve the desired effects.

Believe it or not, most Kratom vendors are very hit or miss, with most being an abysmal miss.

When you find a good one, stick to them.

What Exactly Is Kratom?

Kratom, which also goes by the name Mitragyna Speciosa, is a plant that exclusively derives from Southeast Asia.

This plant is extremely unique in that it acts like a stimulant when taken in low doses, but it can also encourage deep relaxation when taken in higher doses.

Kratom Powder

It is BY FAR safer than traditional Opiates, and it has been used for years by the people of Southeast Asia as a herbal wonder drug to relieve many different ailments, as well as to provide a vast array of amazing benefits.

Benefits Of Kratom/What To Expect

This plant is most well known for its’ amazing abilities to eliminate general/physical discomfort (or reduce it to tolerable levels).

It also provides the following amazing benefits:

  • Naturally promotes a sense of well-being that lasts 4 to 6 hours
  • Increased social freedom
  • Increased productivity
  • Increased motivation levels
  • Greatly improved mood
  • Can support sexual health (makes you “last longer”)
  • Improved mental clarity
  • Suppresses appetite
  • Reduces general/physical discomfort (as already mentioned)

It Does An Amazing Job Providing ALL Of These Benefits

Kratom Side Effects

  • Harder to orgasm (actually a benefit for those who have difficulty lasting in bed)
  • Dehydration (stay hydrated on Kratom, it will dehydrate you a bit)
  • Sedative effects at very high doses, AKA it makes you drowsy and sleepy (you should never dose this high though anyways)
  • Nausea (usually only if you aren’t used to it or you have too much)
  • Tolerance will build up if you don’t take days off

Kratom Dosage Guidelines

When I first started playing around with Kratom quantities, I found that this was a pretty accurate assessment of what dose would equate to what effects:

2 – 4 grams = mild effects (Stimulant Effects)

4 – 6 grams = medium effects (Stimulant Effects or Sedative/Analgesic Effects)

6 – 8 grams = strong effects (Sedative/Analgesic Effects; Too strong for most people)

8 grams or Higher = very strong effects (Sedative/Analgesic Effects; NOT RECOMMENDED)

With the “stimulant effects” it is common to experience more of the motivation, increased productivity, improved mood, increased social freedom and sociability, and an increase in energy.

As you venture closer to the strong dosage ranges it becomes more evident that there is some desensitization to general discomfort (both physical and emotional) and increased relaxation (with slower strains typically).

Be advised that the above dosage chart is not applicable to extracts (which you shouldn’t use anyways as they will skyrocket your tolerance).

This chart is for Kratom leaves or powder.

Sensitivity to Kratom will vary from individual to individual so this guideline absolutely isn’t set in stone, but I find it generally is pretty accurate for most individuals.

Start with a small dose (2 grams is good), and assess from there, and only have more next time if you need it.

Do not start off trigger happy and slam 8 grams of Kratom, or you will probably end up with your head in a toilet puking and never know the magic that this stuff can provide you.

I remember all too well when my friend went on a date with a girl and dosed Kratom WAY too high for his first time, and he had to pull over at a gas station and go puke because he took way too much.

Be smart and responsible and you will have a much smoother experience than he did.

How To Measure Out Kratom Dosages

The biggest mistake I made when I first started trying Kratom was not having an accurate scale for measuring.

You need a very sensitive one that will notice small increments of even 0.01 grams being added or subtracted.

A typical food scale isn’t sensitive enough to pick this up, so I highly recommend you get a 0.01 gram sensitivity scale.

This is the one I use for Kratom and RU58841 powder, as it is EXTREMELY accurate.

Digital Scale

You can get it here: American Weigh Digital Scale, 100g [0.01g sensitivity]

How To Take Kratom

While some people like to put it in their protein shakes, or make tea with it, or make their own Kratom capsules and pop them, I prefer the “toss and wash” method.

To perform the “toss and wash” I simply get a glass of water or another beverage, and then throw the Kratom into the back of my mouth, and then chase it down with the drink.

This is the most quick and painless way to take Kratom in my opinion.

Sipping a giant mixed Kratom drink didn’t work out too well for me…. But you will find out more about that later in the article.

Kratom is most potent when taken on an empty stomach, so try and avoid eating for a few hours before having any.

If I have just eaten, I will usually have to add another couple grams to my dose or else I won’t feel it.

How Long Does Kratom Take To Kick In And How Long Do Kratom Effects Last

I find that Kratom kicks in around the 30 minute mark, but if I have food in my stomach this is slowed down a bit.

It can take an hour to an hour and a half to kick in if you have a full stomach, and the effects will be less pronounced in my experience.

The effects typically lasts around 6 hours.

Don’t Buy Kratom Capsules

While I do agree wholeheartedly that Kratom tastes like crap (some people like the taste of it but I can’t stand it), DO NOT make the mistake of buying Kratom capsules.Gelatin Capsule

You will be charged an extremely high premium fee to have it in caps, and you could easily just buy a bunch of empty caps yourself and cap them at home for a much lower price.

You can get 1000 caps for next to nothing here: Empty Gelatin Capsules 0 Size -1000 Empty Capsules

Don’t Mix Several Strains Unless You Have Tested Them In Small Doses (You’ll Puke)

I had a horrible experience with this where I mixed 3 different strains into a giant shaker cup of Coke Zero.

Not only did it taste like complete butthole and take forever to finish, the 3 strains in the quantities I used clearly conflicted with each other and upset my stomach immensely.

I puked and couldn’t keep anything down for the rest of the day.

In short, don’t mix strains until you know how much you can handle of each individual strain.

Should You Rotate Strains/How Often You Can Use Kratom Safely

This part is debatable, as I know several veteran Kratom users who swear by the rotation method to avoid dependence, but coincidentally those are the same individuals who never come off of Kratom in the first place.

Of the few people I know who have stayed on Kratom every single day for years on end, but adopted a strain rotation protocol, they have managed to keep their tolerance relatively the same, but they are definitely mildly dependent on Kratom.

One friend of mine has major withdrawal symptoms every time he tries to do a washout to reset his tolerance, regardless if he rotates his strains or not.

Granted, I have never taken it every day, simply because I don’t feel like using Kratom every single day, but for those I know who need it to manage physical discomfort, stay off harsher Narcotics, or simply because it makes them feel good and far more productive, they have kept their tolerance very similar to their Day 1 tolerance by rotating between different Kratom strains.

My recommendation is to make your Kratom use a part-time deal.

Save it for when you need it most each week, and use it on those days.

Having it 1-2 days per week should be perfectly fine for keeping your tolerance in check, and avoiding any kind of dependency on it.

Difference Between Kratom Strains

Without delving too deep into this, basically there are fast, moderate, and slow strains.

Each strain provides different benefits based on their speed, with fast strains providing more energy, motivation social freedom and productivity, and slower strains being more relaxing and calming.

A good example of scenarios when it would be ideal for each strain to be used would be if you were going to a social gathering with your friends or a night on the town then a fast strain would be perfect, if you were studying or just lounging then a slow strain would be best, and if you were working or running errands then a moderate strain would be best.

Ultimately it will take some experimenting to find which strains on which side of the spectrum will be ideal for you individually in different scenarios.

For example, some of my friends actually prefer slow strains for going clubbing and partying even though it is completely contrary to what traditional recommendations would be for that scenario.

Strains aren’t labeled by their speed though, so it is up to you to figure out which strains are fast, moderate, and slow.

Luckily, this is fairly easy to do.

The easiest way to identify which strain is which speed is to check what country or province the strain derives from in Southeast Asia.

  • Thai strains are usually fast (like Maeng Da)
  • Indonesian strains are typically moderate
  • Bali and Borneo strains are usually slow

Granted, there are some exceptions to this guideline, but for newbies this is the easiest way to identify the speeds of each one.

I recommend getting one strain of each speed (Thai, Indonesian, Bali and Borneo) to get your feet wet if you are a total newbie to Kratom, and assessing which speeds you like best and for what scenarios.

While there are general categories (fast, moderate and slow), there are strains that fall between one category and another on the spectrum of perceived speeds.

By that I mean you could have 1 Kratom strain that is blatantly fast, 1 strain that is moderate, and then another strain that is right in the middle between moderate and fast.

Trying to figure out what strains you should get for your specific needs can be near impossible for a newbie, so I added a chart below for you to reference in general what you can expect from each of Happy Hippo's Kratom strains:

Kratom Vendor Quality

There is a night and day difference between most vendors, and it isn’t absurd for me to assert that if you haven’t felt the positive effects of Kratom before after trying it, you more than likely have just been using some really crappy Kratom.

Kratom can be very hit or miss, so when you stock up, MAKE SURE you are using a reputable vendor. I’ve made the mistake of using some of the cheaper lower end brands in the past (or even some high priced nicely marketed Kratom), and I was always very disappointed.

Once you find a vendor that hits the nail on the head with their quality though, it is literally a night and day difference, and your world could very well start to change in a positive way very quickly and very profoundly.

My Recommended Kratom Vendor

Happy Hippo Herbals is competitively priced, but most importantly they have the highest quality Kratom in the industry.

Bowl Of Kratom Powder

There are plenty of fly by night companies, and countless other vendors peddling sub-par under dosed products, but you will not have to worry about that with these guys.

Because Kratom is relatively unknown, many individuals with bad experiences where they didn’t get any of the desired benefits from it actually were just using a sub-par product, and aren’t non-responders at all like they probably believe.

I remember when I first started messing around with Kratom I shopped around with 15+ different vendors, and when I finally hit a product that was accurately dosed, it was blatantly obvious how much of a night and day difference a good Kratom vendor is from a bad one.

Happy Hippo’s entire product lineup has equally high quality, and more importantly it is CONSISTENTLY high quality.

  1. You can also keep tolerance at bay and prolong effects by taking 200mg elemental magnesium, 2g Turmeric, 10mg Bioperine 20-30 minutes prior ingesting Kratom.

I’ve been taking low dose (~5g) Kratom daily for 6 years and although i definitely have some mild addiction I’ve never had the need to go over my dose. However, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone really unless you are 110% aware of your body and have self-control and can realistically determine the benefit/cost ratio. For me its worth it, because it makes me productive, motivated and puts me in a good mood so i can enjoy life even at work.

  2. Any negative effects on building muscle? I’m on trt so I’m not worried about it effecting test levels, which we know does effect natural levels.

    1. You should be fine then, that would be the only main concern, but you are on TRT so it isn’t relevant. Other than that, drink a bit more water to ensure proper hydration. Kratom can dehydrate you to some extent (more so the higher your dose).

  3. What’s the difference between Kratom and Phenibut? What would be better for enhancing ones social life and relieveing anxiety?

    1. They are totally different, I have an article on Phenibut that explains exactly how it works. Phenibut is a far better pro-social compound that reduces social anxiety.

Hey Derek, man I’ve had a total of 20 back surgeries and with these new laws DEA. I’m down to 2 Oxycodone a day and doing ok I guess. Now this crazy Dr. is wanting me to stop the Oxycodone and try Suboxone. What I read it’s for getting off opioids & no for pain!! I don’t think I have a say so about that. Anyway what do you think would work best for me? I have 8 3” lagbolts, 2x4x3/8 rods & a spacer to take the place of 1 vertebrae I crushed & he thinks I need to stop talking meds after 20 years.

  5. I been takin norco for 2 years I want to stop already but I can’t because of the withdrawal and I can’t go to rehab, would Kratom help me get over the Norcos and help with the withdrawals?

    1. I was on Norco for over a year, however, I simply went cold turkey myself.. sort of part of my personality. But I believe Kratom will definitely help. I like Kratom way more than Norco. I was actually just prescribed Norco again after an accident, and I didn’t care for it. For about 2 years, I take 1 or 2 grams of Slow Mo Hippo and 1 gram of Red Hot Hippo (these can be found on the chart above). For me, this is the perfect mix of relax and focus (similar feeling as when I was on Norco but better) when I’m just studying new information or playing video games. 2 grams Slow Mo when I want a heavy painkiller effect. Personally, I don’t take any while I work or drive. I’ve only ever bought from Hippo, so I can’t speak for other brands. Congrats for wanting to better yourself! I did the same exact thing you’re doing. Not sure if this can apply to you, but I also found that changing my diet and going to therapy helped my physical pain tremendously. Turns out mental disorders like PTSD can severely affect the body. Good luck!

  6. Hi Derek, have you heard of any strains that increase appetite? Like an alternative to mk677 or weed.

Also how would you compare kratom to weed in regards to longterm health wise?

  7. I appreciate your review of Kratom. I used kratom for a while when I was battling drug abuse and this stuff is definitely the real deal. Your dosage chart is also very accurate with my experiences. The opiate like effects kratom gives you is unbelievable. Or at least it was to me. Also like you mentioned the dependence is uncomfortable but nothing like opiate dependence. The overall feeling of wellness kratom produces is amazing and hard to mimic with my experiences. Thanks for giving us a reputable vendor.

  8. Kratom users beware!!! The pain med “specialists” will probably NOT recommend Suboxone if they know you are using it. It throws your true “need” for withdrawal/ pain management, dosages off. And there’s no way to trick them. Before they even look at you, they will have your urine (and sometimes blood) checked and screened way before they give you anything. So, if Subs aren’t cutting it and you still like the K kick, then abstain for as long as it takes to clear. My .02 from a very, very experienced individual who has been to hell and back trying to find a good doctor and proper pain management.
